Maria Bota, OBE

I love enabling artists, communities and organisations to create excellent, powerful, creative moments, rooted in a place, and to celebrate and tell stories. Stories that stay in hearts, minds and on retinas for life. It’s alchemy to me!

I equally love growing the skillset of an organisation: how to develop, deliver and evaluate programmes, festivals and events which transform people and places. Sowing seeds for the future, in confidence, expression, creativity and opening up new parts of the public realm for artists and communities to dream in. Enjoying the pride of ‘we did this’ together.

The journey so far

My work builds on 30+ years in the arts, encompassing visioning, artistic director, chief executive and marketing roles. I have commissioned, programmed and presented work indoors, outdoors and online, responding to contemporary and heritage settings. I bring experience within international arts companies, festivals and venues, in subsidised and commercial environments.

The first part of my career focused on marketing and management. The second half has concentrated on creative visioning, commissioning, programming and producing across all art forms, advising as a consultant, and delivering as an artistic and/or executive director or as a creative producer.

Other accomplishments

I have served as a trustee of HOME, Without Walls, Quest Ltd, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and Arts About Manchester, and I am currently honoured to be on the Board of The Sunday Boys.

I am a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts and was awarded an OBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for Services to the Arts.

In 2014 I was given the International Prize for the Promotion of Catalan Culture by the Fundació Ramon Llull for the programme of contemporary and traditional Catalan arts in Salisbury in 2013.

In 2005, I became a Clore Leadership Fellow, participating in a programme forged by Chris Smith and Sue Hoyle, aimed at developing leaders in the arts. My secondments included working with Artangel, Artichoke and culture10.

Roles & commissions

Beginning with my first role at the London Symphony Orchestra in 1991, I’ve delivered in artistic, chief executive, marketing and management areas, for example:
